How to Prevent Domestic Violence on College Campuses

Bias related crimes on college campuses have been of increasing concern to campus administrators and law enforcement officials alike. The most common crimes on college campuses are petty thefts, and the items stolen most often are bikes, backpacks, and laptop computers. Ninety-five percent of violent crimes on college campuses are a result of alcohol intake. Twenty-three percent experienced unwanted sexual advances caused by those under the influence of alcohol. In general binge drinkers cause more problems via unplanned sex, hitting, insulting and damage to property than nondrinkers. Alcohol is also more likely to be involved with harmful behaviors and other causes of teen death like homicide, suicide, contraction of sexually transmitted disease (STD) and unwanted pregnancy. For too long, the number of hate crimes on college campuses has been substantially under reported, leaving students and parents with an incomplete picture of campus safety. Sexual assault has been one of the most prevalent crimes on college campuses throughout the nation. Twenty-five percent of women ages 18 to 24 will be victims of attempted or successful sexual assault, and nearly 90 percent of those victims will know their rapist.

Recent research suggests that the high rates of sexual assault on college campuses correlate to a belief and acceptance of rape myths, include blaming the victim for the way she dresses or acts, or excusing rape because of the presence of alcohol. Not only are these attitudes disturbing, but are shown to correlate to a greater likelihood of committing sexual violence (McMahon).
